Course Overview

Our Asbestos Awareness and Sampling course provides an introduction to asbestos and a basic understanding of the regulations surrounding it under the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR 2012). It aims to develop delegates knowledge regarding the hazards and risks associated with Asbestos, helping workers to safe-guard themselves and others that may be affected by their work. The course will also cover Sampling Strategy, Safe Systems of Work, PPE and RPE and decontamination procedures.

Asbestos facts

Explanation of different fibre types, its history and asbestos properties.

Health effects

An explanation of the risks of asbestos exposure.

Asbestos in buildings

Locations and uses of asbestos, types of asbestos products.

Legislation

Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 in relation to the following:

  • Duty to manage
  • Identification of asbestos
  • Notification of work with asbestos
  • Information, instruction and training
  • Prevention or reduction of exposure to asbestos
  • Duty to prevent or reduce the spread of asbestos
Managing risk

Emergencies, asbestos essentials and working safely.

Safe sampling

Covers the following:

  • Using the bSure Testing kit
  • How the process works – explanation of contents/documents
  • Correct use of respiratory and personal protective equipment
  • Decontamination procedures
  • Planning sampling/assessing risk
  • Sampling strategy – size/no of samples to be taken
  • Safe management of waste
  • Safe procedure of packaging to the laboratory

Practical Assessment

All candidates will take a practical assessment where they must demonstrate the ability to take samples correctly and safely. Candidates must also show that they can properly bag and package the samples and complete the relevant bSure paperwork included with each test kit.

N.B – All sampled materials used for demonstration and assessment purposes are non-asbestos containing samples.

This course is suitable for general maintenance staff, electricians, plumbers, construction workers, decorators or any employees involved in any part of the building maintenance process who may disturb the fabric of a building.
